BIOGRAPHY

DPLG (government-awarded qualification) architect Chafik Gasmi is also an industrial designer.
He began his career in 1987 when he designed a house in Algiers and a hotel in Paris.
In 1990 he set up his own publishing house “UNIVERS INTERIEUR”.

In 1992, the Salon du Meuble (Paris Furniture Fair) in Paris awarded him the Grand Prix de la Critique
for all of his creations.

In 1997, after three years of asceticism at the MOULIN GALLAND factory where he reinvented the
entire catalogue of outdoor furniture including the legendary “Square” chair and the “Bottle Holder”,
which had already been appropriated as a “readymade” by Marcel Duchamp in 1914, Chafik was
awarded, jointly with the brand, the Nombre d’Or prize, thereby endorsing an exemplary collaboration
between a manufacturer and designer.

VIA dedicated a solo show to him and his Yin chair was chosen by the Hotel Matignon, where he still
furnishes the reception rooms for the Prime Minister.

The same year, SEPHORA entrusted him with project management for the megastore on the Champs-Elysées
and gave him artistic direction of the brand. For 7 years, Chafik actively participated in the global development
of SEPHORA. He created the “flagships” for New York and Barcelona. He designed the layout and set design
for the shops in the network. His vision, incorporating art and beauty, ensured immediate great commercial
success.

In 2001, Chafik was awarded the Prix de l’Observeur du Design for SEPHORA BLANC, a trend-setting holistic
perfumery concept dedicated to wellbeing.
